Poster and magazine photographs

These are pictures that we took as a group, which will be used for our magazine front cover and poster. We wanted both the main characters to be in the pictures in particular poses that represent their character in the film. We wanted the girl played by Mercedes to look moody as she is annoyed with him for being clumsy and ruining their relationship. We wanted the boy played by Lewis to look happy and romantic which is why we gave him props like a heart shaped box of chocolates and a flower as he is trying to be romantic and win her back. We wanted these photos to have a comical look to them as we want to make brand the film as a rom-com which comedy in it and not too serious like normal romance films. We plan to edit these and use them for our poster and magazine after christmas.

Storyboard Animatic

This is a link to youtube for our storyboard animatic:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUke-6xZQgA

Our animatic of our storyboard is a more detailed plan of our teaser trailer. It has all the scenes that we are planning to film, edited with transitions and a song in the background. The storyboard show how the teaser trailer will begin. As you can see we have decided to use 3 different production companies, as in previous research we found that teaser trailers use one main production company in our case we will be using Universal which is a popular company used by Rom-Coms. We will also be using mine, Rachel & Mercedes' company from last years coursework and Alex's from her trailer she created last year. These will be Jellyfish Productions and Wollf Productions. These companies will be heard with their original sounds in the background too. These will only last a few seconds and will lead into the teaser trailer through the use of a transition. We have decided to do this as we saw that Rom-Com trailers use more than company and this is a convention we wanted to keep. The soundtrack we put in the background is not the song we will use in the actual teaser trailer, but we wanted to find something which would give a good idea of what we will be using and will be trying to portray to the audience.
Throughout our teaser trailer we will be using a few different questions/phrases which will help the audience to understand the meaning of the trailer, the narrative and to hook them into watching the film. We also found that other Rom-Coms such as Love Actually and Valentines Day use this convention, which helps to hook the audience in. After the prodution companies the first title that appears is 'He found Faith'. This will be in Pink and Blue, as this is the themed colours of our teaser trailer, poster and magazine as they suggest a boy and girl and are also typical romantic colours used in Rom-Com films. We used this phrase as it suggests that the young boy thought he found his true love, it also grabs the attention of the audience and hooks them in. At this point the background tune will begin, making the trailer more romantic and add a romantic atmosphere for the audience.
After the first title this will then lead onto the first clip we will theme. We are planning to film quite a few scenes, which will all be a few seconds long to make it more a teaser trailer rather than normal trailer, and to give it a fast pace and hook in the audience. The first of the clips is off them taking a picture of themselves with a camera outside of the cinema. We decided on this simple first clip as we wanted to show them as a couple and introduce the two main characters, also this is a typical action which couple do and would easily suggest them as a couple. Then leads onto the second title which reads 'But he was hopeless'. This will be in the same themed colours, and will suggest to the audience the enigma of the teaser trailer which is their break-up and do they get back together or not. It will also target the audience perfectly as they will interested and want to know more.
This then leads onto a quick montag of clips which illustrate how the young boy is hopeless and how he may loose his girlfriend over his uselessness. These will be quick and precise which will keep the audiences attention. This montag of clips will start with him falling out of bed maybe knocking over an alarm clock which will be located in his bedroom. We decided on this as it is a simple thing that he does clumsily and adds to hopelessness of his character. This will target our audience as they will find this funny and will be hooked into the comedy and romance of the teaser trailer. The second clip is of him knocking over water or a drink onto a picture of them two together or a card he gave him. We decided to use this as it shows how useless he is with his girlfriend, and we wanted to have one specific clip which would show his clumpsyness and how it effects her. This clip will be located in a kitchen as it illustrates the everyday activity that is taking place and how he ends up messing it up. This will then cut to the third clip which is off him accidentially letting a door go which will hit her and cause her to get embarrased. This will be filmed at school, as it will target our audience as they will most likely be in school thereselves and this may have happened to them. This montag of the clips will the fast paced as to grab the audiences attention with a catchy soundtrack in the background to illustrate the clips and add to the genre as Rom-Com.
This will then lead onto a title which will read 'She'd had enough'. This will represent how the hopelessness of his character portrayed in the earlier clips has led to their break-up. This will hook in the audience and make them want to watch the film.
We wanted to link this title to the young girl, so we wanted a short clip at the end with her sitting on her bed crying with a picture of them. We will have her tearing up the picture, which is illustrating how she has had enough of their relationship.
Lastly this will lead to the title of the film which is 'Loosing Faith' and then 'Coming Soon'. We decided to use coming soon not a actual date as many teaser trailer we have previously watched dont give away the date of release as it is made a long time before the actual trailer is released. This will be in the same themed colours as the rest of the titles which is pink and blue.

A new storyboard!!!

In recent media lesson we have discussed new ideas for our teaser trailer which gave it that unique element that Rom-com films normally have that make them attractive for the audience to watch. As we have a new plan for our teaser trailer we started to plan out a storyboard which we will then film and take pictures of and put on our blogs to show how our ideas have progressed. We looked at our teaser trailers to see how long they were, what they included and what important elements we needed to include also. The teaser trailers we looked at was Toy Story 3, 2010, Blair Witch Project and Twilight. We saw that they all had a production company at the start or end of the teaser trailer, and the most popular one was Universal. We have decided to use this as our main production company but also add in our groups company from last year and Alex's from her last project. We decided to do this as we found that the teaser trailers included more than one production company. We are going to use Jellyfish productions and Wolff productions. These showings of our film production companies will take the first few seconds of the teaser trailer, as this is one of the conventions used on other teaser trailers that we have looked at and one we want to keep in our coursework not challenge. This will then lead onto a short clip of the young girl and boy outside a cinema theatre taking a picture together of themselves, we wanted to use this short clip of them doing this as it shows them together and leads onto how the break-up. This will be followed by a montag of clips of the young boy doing clumsy things in his everyday life, which people normally find easy to carry out. Such as knocking over an alarm clock, knocking over drinks, falling out of bed, ruining something special that the couple have together (a pciture). This will make it clearer to the audience that this young boy's actions which are clumsy and arkward will be the reason why this couple break-up. Although that will be shown in the teaser trailer, we didnt want to give away how he tries to win her back and if they do end up together. After this montag we wanted to add in a short clip which will bring the teaser trailer to an end with her walking away from him suggesting she is walking away from their relationship. We decided on this plot for our storyboard as it has features of a rom-com such as the relationship is the romance and the clumsy things the boy does and how he wins her back as the humour part. We have included a few key features in the teaser trailer, but we wanted it to end in a way which will make the audience want to see the film and be interested in the plot.

Teaser trailer research

When we were discussing new ideas we watched some teaser trailers of this genre which helped us to brainstorm new ideas.
We looked at 500 days of Summer, in which the teaser trailer shows Tom wining the girl (Summer), but also loosing her. It shows their relationship, love, distance, actions which push them apart. It also shows a montage of different clips. This helped us to discuss new ideas.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILCB_f0IIyI

We also looked at Valentines Day, as it has the typical rom-com element with a little twist of many different high and lows of relationship from range of people. We gained different ideas from this as it showed how we could use different clumsy actions to show love lost but also how they gain fall back in love.

A new plan

In the last few lessons as a group and with our teacher we decided that our idea for our teaser trailer wasn't good enough as many romantic comedies consist of having that unique element that makes it different and contributes to the humour. We have discussed many different ideas with our teacher and as a group. In our new planning we have kept the genre as a romantic comedy and kept the same two main characters as a young girl and boy which is a main convention of a rom-com film which we have decided to keep. By having a new idea for our teaser trailer it meant we needed to rethink our posters and magazine front cover but as our pictures were quite simple and with a slight improvement we made them more current to our teaser trailer and the message we were trying to portray. The new idea that we have decided on is quite uncomplicated but effective, we wanted to have the typical boy and girl romance which makes a romantic comedy film but to add to the comedy part of it we have decided to have the boy as very clumsy, awkward and humorous.  This would contribute to the funny and humour side of the teaser trailer. The main aim of our teaser trailer now is to have the young boy being very clumsy and this being the reason why he losses the girl he loves. This is a typical rom-com narrative but with a diverse twist to make it unique and different from others. As a teaser trailer is very short we needed quick, effective and eye catching clips which would hook an audience and portray the right message to the audience, which is a boy losing the girl he loves through his clumsy actions and the cliff hanger of does he win her back. This message will be portray in our teaser trailer, poster and magazine in order to hook the audience and make them want to watch the film.
The next step was to brainstorm significant ideas on how the young boy can be portrayed as clumsy and how we can portray him loosing the girl in a matter of seconds. We decided on showing a montage of clips which would show him being clumsy and embarrassed to the point where he loses the girl and the question of will he win her back???
The ideas we came up with included:
·         Him spilling a drink over her
·         Embarrassment at a dance or in a dance lesson (he steps on her toe)
·         In a car where a romantic scene would normally take place he accidentally put on the handbrake and the car roles back.
·         An accidental tap on a car when he is trying to look cool ends up in an alarm sounding and embarrassment from the young boy.
·         Being clumsy in front of her friends and making her embarrassed.
We wanted to show a montage of clips which would just show him being clumsy and the hook of the teaser trailer being will he win her back???

Magazine research

megan-fox-covers-total-film-magazine--nov-2009-megan-fox-olsen-twins-news-d7fc7b2d76bb820d6a88313edb0dccc8.jpg
These are examples of some Total Film magazine front covers which i have analysed and helped me and my group to create some inital ideas on what our magazine will look like. When looking at these magazines it suggested some conventions of magazines which me and my group needed to decide will be kept or challenged within our coursework. These magazines all have a bold title of a film in which the picture on the front is normally from. Also when researching magazines we found that the picture on the front was off the main characters in a particular pose that suggests their character in the film. We decided that we would keep these conventions as the picture we wanted to put on ours will show there specfic characters that are vital for the film.
This poster is a good example of a conventional film magazine, which has all the necessary conventions that a magazine of this type should have.
-It has a big, bold masthead which is instantly recognised by the audience
-Conventional layout with the main image being the cover story (Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock Holmes)
-The bright blue and white colours dominates the front cover and is eye catching for the audience. The dominating colour usually changes depending on what film is the cover story

-Information and content is the main focus, clearly shown with the lack of empty spaces
-The Slogan 'World Exclusive' serves as the selling point as this will attract the audience because the world exclusive will make this magazine unique and eye catching

Magazine inital ideas

We have also planned a front cover of a magazine around our simple idea for our film. We wanted to represent their characters in the front cover but also suggest that it is a Rom-com so it would attract the right audience. The ideas we have created include:
The simple plan of our magazine----

These are the four ideas in which we came up with. The picture to the right is the most popular idea which fitted in with the characters, storyline and target the right audience:

Poster idea

We have done lots of research into different posters for rom-com films. We found specific elements that we seen in rom-com posters which we have decided to follow into our poster such as bold title at the bottom of the age with the billingblock and the image on the front of the main characters with a specific pose to represent their character. We have come up with a few ideas with the most popular, creative idea being the picture below.
The poster which we have as our main idea at the moment is a torn picture of the two main characters to suggest their relationship, as she is the girl with the attitude totally incompatiable with the male character who is the nice guy. We want the picture to look as if it has been pulled apart and tapped together to suggest the enigma of the film. We wanted them to be posing as if to represent she is the girl with the attitude and he is the kind hearted guy who is too nice for her. We have the title of the film which is Hating Faith as our research showed that Rom-com films normally have a phrase or more than one word titles, we have kept this convention and used two words as our title. The title Hating Faith is quite effective as it is what he should be doing towards her. She is Faith and for her terrible attitude towards him he should hate her not fall in love with her, it contradicts their relationship.

Storyboard planning

We have discussed a basic outline of a plot for our film so we can create a teaser trailer, poster and magazine front cover around this storyline. As we are doing a Rom-com, we decided on a simple but effective storyline in which we have decided to add in an extra elements to the film to make it more different and unique from other sterotypical romatic films.
This is our first draft of a storyboard in which is our basic plot but is still being altered to improve it to make it different and better than others:

Target Audience research

Over the past view lessons we have discussed our target audience and done tasks to see whether a choice is the best for our genre and whether they would enjoy the teaser trailer, poster and magazine. As we had decided on a Romantic Comedy genre for our coursework we discussed and researched into what target audience are most interested in this genre. When watching other teaser trailers of Rom-Com genre such as 27 dresses, 10 things I hate about you and he’s just not that into you we found that just by watching them they were attracting us and that we were interested in them. This was a big help towards deciding on a target audience as we ourselves found them interesting. We then decided on a target audience of 13-19 teenage girls, as that is the age range we are in and if we were the audience we would be attracted and interested in it. When we had decided on having a 13-19 girl target audience we decided to do some more research and go and ask people who would come in this age range and see what genre of film they prefer and why. The common response from teen girls was Rom-Coms as they contain romance, love, girly stories that they fantasise about and wish would happen to them. Also they contain the comedy element which makes them more attractive to this audience and makes them more humorous to watch. As we have decided on this target audience we are going to try and include this in our short teaser trailer to appeal to our target audience and create something that teenage girls would happily pay money to go and see. We also chose this audience because when watching these teaser trailers they do not seem to be target at boys as they don’t contain elements that you would expect boys to like such as action movies with car chases and fight scenes. I think when a 13-19 teenage girl audience is watching Rom-coms they are an active audience as they can take what they want from the film and have different understandings of the films. Romantic comedy films consist of love and humour but the audience can take this in different ways as they can agree with the relationships or fantasise that it was them, wishing they were the characters. The audience can get different understandings of these films, as when I watch a film of this genre I may perceive one thing while when it is discussed other people may have different opinions.
The research I have done on target audience is basic questions asked to young girls in this target audience age range and finding their opinions and seeing if our decisions have been the right ones so far. I have also analysed posters and magazines front covers to see whether they attract me as I am in the target audience age range and enjoy rom-coms myself. This will help us to discover whether our chosen target audience will enjoy and be attracted to them. I have looked at 27 Dresses, Valentine’s Day, Finding Greta and 10 things I hate about you.

Poster Planning!

In the last view lessons we have had of media we have begun to discuss more indepth about our poster and different aspects they we wanted to have. As we have decided on a Rom-Com genre for our teaser trailer and a basic outline of the what the storyline would be we could then start to plan our poster ideas. Th basic plot of our Rom-Com is based around a girl who has an attitude and a boy who is the nice, kind guy and the relationship between them. By having this basic outline of our storyline it made it easier for us to start our poster planning. When researching into other posters we found specific conventions such as the title of the film at the bottom of the page like in 'Hes just not that into you' which has the title at the bottom of the page above the billingblock. We also researched into the images, and taglines that are on Rom-Com posters. By doing this we could see that many Rom-Com genre posters have the two main characters on the front in specific poses that portrays their character such as 'how to loose a guy in 10 days'. The main pictures we found on these posters were usually trying to represent love and romance. This is what we decided to incorporate into our poster. We had a brainstorm in Tuesday's lesson about movie titles and taglines.
Possible Titles:
Hating Faith
Incompatiable
Opposites Attract
Hot N Cold
Hate to Love
Taglines:
Every rose has its thorn
You dont have to like someone to love them
Also in our research we found that titles of Rom-Com films are normally more than one word, like a small phrase such as 'He's just not that into you', 'Pretty Woman' and '13 going on 30'.

Research and Planning 11/11

For our A2 coursework we have decided to create a teaser trailer, poster and magazine front cover for a Romantic Comedy film. We have done research into the types of teaser trailers and more specifically how posters of Rom Com films are portrayed.  The typical poster we found of Rom Com films was plain white backgrounds with brightly coloured fonts to attract the audience and make them think of romance and happiness when they look at the poster. These types of posters consist of having pictures of men and women portrayed to be in love. The posters tend to be simply but effective in the message and genre they are representing.

This poster called According to Greta is one that I researched into. As it is a typical Rom-com film which targets the same audience as what we plan to do. The layout of the poster is similar to one of our intial ideas and gave me some new ideas of how we can set out our poster. This poster has a main pciture of the character who is played by Hilary Duff and bright colours to attract the audience. The overall look of the poster also looks quite comic like and drawings which is one of the inital ideas we have.
While researching into rom-com posters these were the ones in particular that helped us to create some initial ideas for our own posters. For example The ugly truth has the picture of the characters and the use of the red hearts suggesting love and the title at the bottom of the page.
